The Youngest

We were kids, just kids.

There wouldn't be any more of us after Rabbit, but we didn't know that then. Mother and father were intent on a big family, one of those noisy clans that threatens to burst from its pew, one where for all intents and purposes the older children raise the younger. Rabbit changed their minds. About having a lot more kids, then about having any more, then about staying married to each other.

Whether something evil was born into her, or something good was left out, it wasn't her fault, not really. It's never a baby's fault.

  4. David,

I like your writing style and your turn of phrase, but I don't think that little girl is evil. Camera shy maybe, but probably not the spawn of the dark one...;-) Keep 'em coming. :-)

  5. Love this, David. I kept thinking of Rabbit as a problem child - just not a problem that big!

    1. I mean, the mother literally 'in the shadows' is pretty compelling too, but as we've established above: you gotta go for the rabbit. :)

  7. Interesting- a child who acts as a catalyst for the cracks to appear. it’s not unknown.

    1. It's the ones that look normal, they're the ones that are the most dangerous. Just you wait. You'll see... ;)

    1. It's weird, the thing about this picture that really jumped out at me was the JFK-funeral-ish overcoats. But try writing a drabble about evil overcoats. TRY. :)
